Criticism of Endocrine Society Guidelines Grows

Quentin L. Van Meter, M.D., president of the American College of Pediatricians (ACPeds) and Andre Van Mol, M.D., Co-Chair of the Adolescent Sexuality Committee, and colleagues, were published in the March 2019 issue of the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. Their letter to the editor “Endocrine Treatment of Gender-Dysphoric/Gender-Incongruent Persons: An Endocrine Society Clinical Practice Guideline” criticizes the  “Endocrine Society Guidelines for the treatment of Transgender Persons” which was published in 2017.  The authors cite scientific literature that argues against hormonal manipulation as a means to treat children with gender dysphoria. This is one of an increasing number of publications from around the world that challenges the social and medical affirmation of non-traditional gender identities in youth. It is the first critical response to be published in the journal that released the Endocrine Society guidelines.
